David Rawlings, your specialist Personal Trainer in Cheltenham
In my role as an Exercise Referral Practitioner, a Personal Trainer specialising in long term health conditions, I have supported over 500 people with chronic hip and/or knee pain.
My Approach
We will use my specialist knowledge and experience to help create a personalised action plan, for the next part of your rehabilitation and recovery.
ESCAPE-pain, a rehabilitation programme for people with chronic joint pain
From 2016 to 2020 I supported the delivery of the ESCAPE-pain programme at Cheltenham Leisure Centre, working alongside the NHS Physiotherapists fom Cheltenham General Hospital.
This link with the Physiotherapy team led me to work as a UK wide trainer, supporting the national roll out of ESCAPE-pain.
“David Rawlings acted as a co-tutor for ESCAPE-pain facilitator training between 2018 and 2020.
During this time, David co-delivered 14 training courses for a mix of clinicians and exercise professionals across the UK. These sessions trained a total of 135 professionals to deliver the ESCAPE-pain programme in their local services.
We are grateful for David’s contribution to the success and national spread of the ESCAPE-pain programme.”

Joint Pain Action Plan is inspired by Joint Pain Advice (a model of care for chronic joint pain) and ESCAPE-pain (a group based rehabilitation programme), both of which were developed by Professor Hurley and managed by the MSK team at the Health Innovation Network, South London and then subsequently at Orthopedic Research UK.
I am grateful for the training I received, the excellent resources they produced and the ongoing support from the team at the Health Innovation Network (HIN) and Orthopedic Research UK, who coordinated the national roll out of the ESCAPE-pain programme.
The MSK team at the HIN coordinated the delivery of Joint Pain Advice (JPA) in over 20 locations across England, helping over 1400 people learn how to self-manage their joint pain.
The Joint Pain Advice model was recognised by NICE as an excellent example of how NICE guidance and standards are being put into practice.
Evaluation from the JPA pilot studies showed improvements in clinical outcomes for people who had access to JPA; for example, reduction in pain, increase in function and ability to carry out activities of daily living, improvements in mental well-being as well as fewer GP consultations and reduction in referrals to diagnostics.
